Environmental Stewardship

Ontario Pork is a leader in environmental stewardship

The pork industry is proactive in the use of environmentally-friendly farming practices – with Nutrient Management Plan uptake outperforming that of many other commodity groups.

Ontario Pork partners with other agri-food groups to provide leadership on policy development, peer-to-peer mentoring and real action on the issues of climate change and Great Lakes phosphorus reduction.

Ontario Pork continues to work with OMAFRA and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to promote and consult on issues impacting the pork industry and agri-food sectors.

Ontario Pork partners with, and contributes to, industry initiatives to improve nutrient stewardship, including, but not limited to, the Timing Matters Peer-to-Peer initiative to reduce manure spreading at high-risk times, the Great Lakes Basin and Water Quality Board, and the Thames River Collaborative which evaluates technologies for their effectiveness to reduce nutrient runoff losses from farmland.

Ontario Pork is also an active member of ECO-Ag, a collaboration of agriculture organizations that work together on protecting the environment and jointly advocating for practical and effective solutions.
